POEM: New Mother

the flies amass
over the unrinsed bowl of applesauce
and the crumpled Kleenex
used to wipe the puke
bakes in a blade of light

the baby squawks from her crib
but I am coming down with a nap
a slumber so heavy that I fail
to rise to clarion call of duty
